Implementing a twice-daily at-home dental hygiene routine of brushing and flossing can help prevent many common oral issues, like cavities and gum disease. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll never experience a dental emergency.

For instance, you might develop a persistent or severe toothache in the evening after your dentist’s office has closed. If your discomfort is keeping you from quality rest, continue reading to learn 3 things you can try to alleviate the ache and get a good night’s sleep!

Tip #1: Apply A Cold Compress

One simple way to address the throbbing in your mouth is to apply a cold compress or ice pack to the sore side of your face for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. The cold constricts the blood vessels to reduce uncomfortable swelling and inflammation. It can also provide a temporary numbing sensation that just might provide relief long enough for you to drift off to dreamland. But please remember to cover the ice pack in a clean cloth or towel before pressing it to your skin to avoid potential frostbite.

Tip #2: Rinse With Salt Water

Did you know that salt water can act as a natural disinfectant and help ease toothaches? It can draw fluid out of your inflamed connective tissues to offer some much-needed relief from the throbbing of built-up pressure behind your tender tooth. It can also kill bacteria in your mouth that contribute to many common oral issues, such as cavities and gum disease, to help protect your smile.

You can mix your own solution by adding about ½ tsp of salt into a cup of warm water and stirring it until it dissolves. Then, sip and swish it around your mouth, and spit it into the sink. Repeat this process until your glass is empty.

Tip #3: Take Over-the-Counter Medications

Another effective way to reduce dental discomfort is by taking over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Many people have these medications in their medicine cabinet for muscle tension or headaches, but they can also help assuage a toothache. However, please follow the dosage instructions carefully to avoid potential adverse effects.

You might also apply a numbing oral gel directly to the sore tooth for some additional relief. Many stores and pharmacies carry different brands intended for oral use, so if you don’t already have something available at home, you can find a suitable option.

Hopefully, one or more of these techniques can provide enough comfort for you to sleep through the night and call your dentist first thing in the morning!
